INFORMATION ON LADAKH
Ladakh is the highest plateau in India is situated in the Union territory of Ladakh. It covers an area of 860904 sq Kms with much of a region above 3000 M above sea level. The history, culture, traditions, and geography of the region are similar to that of Tibet. Ladakh is a thinly populated region. Buddhism and Islam are dominant religions in Leh & Kargil respectively.
Julley - The Greeting word. Julley is the Ladakhi term equivalent to Namastey, Hello, Welcome, and thank you. One can use it any time anywhere and you will get a similar response with a smile.
Khataks- The offering scarf. Khatak is a scarf made of silk, cotton, synthetic material offered in monasteries, to guests, during formal and informal ceremonies.
The main source of income: About 90% of them depend on agriculture based on the Indus River for their livelihood. Barley, wheat, buckwheat, peas, rapeseed, and beans are the main agricultural products. Apples and apricots are grown in warmer regions of low altitude. Another occupation of the people is sheep-rearing (Pashmina Goat) famous for Kashmir wool. In addition to this, tourism & army are also are a source of income.
Due to sensitive borders with China & Pakistan, tourism had remained closed to outsiders till 1974. More recently it has become a favourable destination for domestic tourism.
Weather: The temperature in summer is quite pleasant while in winter it is harsh and cold. Summer extends from June till September with the temperature climbing up to 30° while the rest of the year cold (Kagi prevail, sometimes reaching - 30° in places like Drass Kargil

LIVING LOCALLY (TRAVELER ADVISORY)
- Dress-Code: Wear appropriate clothing while in the village or encampment. Neither women nor men should were high-cut shorts, although long, baggy shorts are sometimes ok for men. Women should were trekking trousers or tracksuit pants and loose fittings top. When entering a home, temple, monastery, or masque always remove your shoe unless specifically told otherwise.
- Never take photographs until you have secured permission. Never offer money for photographs unless there is a particular sign in the monastery, temple requesting for donation.
- Washing/Bathing: Nudity is completely unacceptable and a swimsuit must be worn even when bathing in a remote locality; even though this also could be considered inappropriate. Wash all clothes and equipment in biodegradable soap in a bucket well away from the water supply. The water supply provides drinking water for a local village or settlement.
- Never throw food into a fire whether at a campsite or at home. It is also expedient not to touch food or cooking utensils that local people will use, also you should use your right hand for all social interactions, whether passing money or food or any other item.
- Do not urinate or defecate near water or in the fields.
- Do not stick your finger or spoon in cooking or serving pots. (Home Stay)
